ATTN: Passionate Breathing Students

I’m recruiting future coaches to help clients overcome some of the most common health challenges today using the power of their own breath. As a certified Breath Coach, you’ll make a huge impact on your clients’ lives and earn a great living. Here are some reasons why it’s a great time to become a coach:

Huge demand

Worldwide interest in breathing is booming, but most of the books and teachers make things so complicated and so extreme that the average person doesn’t know where to turn to for guidance. There are very few coaches, so the timing is perfect.

Deliver immediate results

You’ll deliver positive, mind-body results for your clients in 10 minutes or less, every time. For anyone on a health journey, this immediate positive feedback loop is so rewarding.

Work anywhere

Breath coaching requires very little space, no equipment, and no prior experience. It can even be done virtually via Skype, FaceTime, or Instagram.

Safe and natural

The techniques you’ll learn apply to almost all students, regardless of their age or health status. You’ll help them learn to take control of their nervous system, stress response, sleep quality, and energy with this all-natural approach.

Turnkey business model

You’ll receive done-for-you session plans, marketing materials, online payment options, and pricing plans so you can start right away with no additional investment or start-up cost. It’s plug-and-play so you’ll be ready to take on clients, serve them at a high level, and get paid.

Get certified from home

This course allows for deep learning from the comfort of your own home, and our live course format gives you access to trainers in real-time for feedback, questions, and interactive lectures. It’s the next best thing to being in the studio with us, and in terms of direct access to trainers, it’s even better.

Did You Know?

Amazing Facts About Breathing

You can go for weeks without food, days without water, but only a few minutes without breathing. It has such an immediate impact on your mind and body that even the act of inhaling vs. exhaling affects your nervous system differently. It’s common to train in diet, exercise, and even hydration, but almost no one trains their breath. This is a huge missed opportunity for health-seekers.

Did you know?

  • Breathing can change your blood PH (acid/alkaline) in minutes. No food, exercise or medication acts as quickly.
  • You can often determine your dominant nervous system state simply by placing your finger underneath your nostrils and exhaling.
  • Reduced rate breathing can stimulate a rest and digest, parasympathetic nervous system state to help with sleep, stress, and anxiety.
  • Rapid, pulsed breathing stimulates a sympathetic nervous system response to increase energy, prepare for exercise, or boost the body’s natural defenses.
  • Diaphragmatic breathing massages the vagus nerve and reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and reduces stress.
  • Severe respiratory conditions like asthma can be successfully managed by increasing CO2 levels in the blood.
  • Breathing can help reduce the fear of public speaking, improve digestion, reduce insomnia, lower stress, anxiety, and overwhelm.

Does yoga breathing increase blood oxygen?

Not quite. It manipulates CO2 to help your body absorb the oxygen already in your blood.

Is yoga breathing dangerous?

Only extreme forms. We only teach safe, accessible, and predictable breathing practices.

What is water breathing?

Breathing practices designed to balance your nervous system.

What is whiskey breathing?

Soothing practices that help to calm your nervous system, ideal before bed.

What is coffee breathing?

Stimulating practices often used in the morning and before exercise.

Are there teaching opportunities?

So many! From yoga and fitness studios, to corporate and private sessions.

The Coaching Opportunity

For certified coaches, there are three main teaching opportunities right now. Many coaches focus on work with private clients, creating individualized, solution-oriented sessions. They help people with stress management, sleep disorders, anxiety, or digestive problems. Private clients offer you a flexible schedule, great pay, and the opportunity to make a huge impact.

Next, you’ll have the opportunity to lead group classes in local yoga studios. These added-value classes give dedicated yoga students a deeper understanding of their breathing and enhance their personal practices. Lastly, workshop-style breathing sessions can be very effective in a variety of settings, but corporate clients and fitness centers are the key markets.

Private Sessions

I’ll show you how to quickly find students in your area struggling with challenges like stress, anxiety, sleep problems, digestive issues, or overwhelm. The typical breathing client program is one month and includes a live weekly session (in person or virtual) combined with daily assignments where clients listen to your voice and practice along with a recording.

Location

Your home, their home, or virtually via video chat.

Earning potential

A typical one-month program sells for $149*

Group Classes

These classes are offered at local studios and fitness clubs and include both the “why” and the “how” of yoga breathing. You’ll lecture on the basics, teach group breathing, and assign homework. I’ll give you a sales email to send to local studios in your area so you can book your first 60-minute group class easily and start teaching right away. I’ll also give you posters, event handouts, and promotional materials you can provide to the studios so you’ll look like a pro.

Location

Most group classes are held in local yoga studios or fitness centers.

Earning potential

Specialized group classes usually pay $40-75/hour*

Workshops

These 90-minute sessions include four parts: introduction, lecture, practice, and questions. I’ll show you how to deliver a 90-minute experience and provide you with all the materials needed to pitch and land your first paid gigs. Materials provided include slide show presentation, contract template, pricing info, promotional poster, and handouts for your attendees.

Location

Workshops can take place in yoga studios, fitness centers, or corporate settings.

Earning potential

Workshop revenue starts at $150/hour*

My Story

I started yoga in my early twenties, and I wanted to learn everything. Breathing came up in every class, so I asked all my teachers for more information. Here’s what I wanted to know: Why is breathing important? You say we should breathe deeply, but how deeply? You say breathe slowly, but how slowly? And why not breathe fast? I realized quickly that the yoga community pays lip service to breathing but doesn’t teach or understand it well at all.

I’ve practiced with some of the most esteemed teachers including some modern masters, and I was disappointed to discover that most had only a superficial understanding of breathing. Frustrated, I turned my research to the mainstream medical community and the world of extreme sports, and finally, I found answers.

Medical doctor, Patricia Gerbarg, has dedicated her career to breathing and her work, writing, and our conversations were hugely influential. I worked closely with a senior Buteyko breathing coach who taught me about the vital role of CO2. I also interviewed a number of record-setting free divers and daredevils like Wim Hof, who push breathing to the limits (not something I advocate). I came to learn that there is no mystery to breathing at all. The science of breath has been well-researched for over 100 years, but very few people had applied the actual science to the practices of yoga students. This seems crazy, but it’s true.

I’ve been teaching breathing since 2006.

Lucas has taught yoga breathing since 2006.

After nine months of research, here’s what I learned:

Breathing exercises are all about CO2 (not blood oxygen)

Breathing exercises are mostly about the manipulation of carbon dioxide in the blood, not oxygen. CO2 is not a toxin to be avoided. It’s hugely valuable, and most people over-breathe, not under-breathe, and we need to learn how to conserve CO2.

Slow breathing increases cellular oxygen

Logically, you’d think that if you breathe fast, you’ll get more oxygen, right? Not true. In fact, if you breathe really fast for a few minutes, you’ll get dizzy and might even pass out. Slow breathing increases blood CO2 levels which allows for greater absorption of oxygen.

Breathing doesn’t have to be complicated (at all!)

One of my first yoga teachers taught me 15 different breathing exercises with funky Sanskrit names. As I went further, I learned dozens more. It was so overwhelming. Here’s what I know now: every single breathing exercise is simply affecting your nervous system in one of three ways: parasympathetic, sympathetic, or balancing response. All that complexity and terminology doesn’t add any value to the practices. Simple exercises work just as well and can be learned in minutes with no hard-to-pronounce Sanskrit names or complicated hand positions.

VIDEO: My TEDx talk on breathing

I was so excited by this new knowledge and so frustrated with the misinformation being passed around in the yoga community that I put together a TEDx Talk. So far, the response has been amazing, and it’s being watched by 10-20K people per day. As it turns out, many people were confused with all this “breathe deeply” advice too.

How it Works – Online Training

The course is 12 days long, and each day is focused on a core lesson, live Q&A, and one specific breathing exercise. Sessions start with the breathing practice of the day, we then move into the scheduled core lesson, and finish with breakout rooms where you get to practice what you learned. Next, Lucas answers every single question via a live Q&A, and then we share notes in our group forum.

What to Expect (for 12 days)

  • Core lesson workshop (live online class)
  • Daily breathing practices (5 min each / 3 per day)
  • Live Q&A with Lucas, every single question answered
  • Community support via live chat (Telegram)

All live sessions take place at 6 am California, 9 am NYC, 2 pm London, 3 pm Barcelona time (find your local time). If you’re unable to make the live sessions because of time zone or schedule conflicts, no problem as you’ll get access to the replays immediately the same day.

Plan for two hours per day for the duration of the course and set aside around two hours for your exam. Each student exam is individually reviewed with both written and verbal (audio) feedback. We’re here to support you every step of the way, and everything is in place to ensure your success.

Who is This Course For?

We have trainees who are completely new to teaching, and others who have taught in the mind-body world for years—everyone is welcome! There is no prerequisite to join, and some of our most successful graduates took their very first classes on this course.

About 20 percent of our trainees have no definite plans to teach, they just want to learn – that’s great! The remaining 80 percent usually plan to launch something new or add to what they are already doing. Whatever your intention, the most important thing is that you come with an excitement to learn, participate, and join the group. Our courses are highly interactive, so we want everyone to come ready to dive in.

Breathing vs. Meditation?

In traditional yoga, breathing is aways taught as a stepping stone toward states of sense withdrawal and meditation, but many of us – myself included – try to skip the logical steps. For new students, silent meditation can create anxiety, frustration, and even obsessive rumination. And the biggest problem? Frustration causes most people to quit.

Breathing is different. It’s fun and easy to practice. The counting gives you a mental focus, and the exercises are short and potent. Instead of dodging their daily breathing exercise, students look forward to it. Even more exciting, the measurable health benefits of breathing exercises are well documented and extremely reproducible. This means that with minimal training, students can experience profound results including stress relief, nervous system balance, mood stabilization, better sleep, improved digestion, and the ability to self-soothe at will.

With breathing practice, it puts you into a meditative state automatically. Think of breathing as an active form of meditation with all the same benefits. As a career yoga teacher, I can assure you that clients want results, not meditation awards, so the more I teach breathing, the happier my clients are with the results.

No problem. You can double up your work on another day. The suggested pace is one hour per day, but you can arrange your schedule any way you like.
No, that wouldn’t be fair. We require an 85% or higher score on all exams, and participation throughout the course. You have up to three tries on all exams, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. If you show up and give 100%, you will almost certainly be successful.

You’ll study online with video-based classes. This is particularly effective for learning breathing exercise names, anatomical terms, and session plans. Each day there is a video lecture, a personal practice (that you do), and a practice teaching exercise you’ll do at home.
As long as you have access to a phone or computer, you’ll have no problems. It’s a very low-tech course designed for everyone.
That’s fine! As long as you’re serious about learning, we’re happy to invite you onto the course.
